South Australian Government backs northern Adelaide Park Lands improvements

A long-neglected area of the Adelaide Park Lands is to benefit from a $3 million facelift that will include new picnic areas, bike paths and improved public lighting as part of the first stage of a major revamp of the popular area of green space.

South Australian Planning Minister John Rau approved the funding just hours before the South Australian Government entered pre-election caretaker mode, during which it cannot commit funds to any projects.

The funding will pay for a new picnic and ‘discovery play area’ and improved walking and cycling trails through an area of the northern Park Lands.

More lighting and landscaping are also planned for Park 2, which includes Adelaide Aquatic Centre, tennis courts and sport ovals.

The work marks the first part of Adelaide City and Prospect Councils’ broader, long-term vision for the precinct, expected to cost up to $11 million.

The wider plan - which the City Council endorsed in November last year - includes a new multi-sport clubroom, an extra tennis court, a small plaza and an outdoor gym.

Prospect Mayor David O’Loughlin said the upgrades would encourage more inner-north residents to use the Parklands, telling the Adelaide Advertiser “this is the most comprehensive plan for the beautification and enjoyment ever envisaged for the northern Parklands.

“Strengthening connections between the city and city-fringe suburbs will encourage more cycling (and) walking … and increase the quality and amenity of the Parklands.”

Detailed designs and a construction timeline will be released later this year as part of community consultation.
