Plans to introduce $180,000 seasonal city beach on Adelaide's River Torrens
Plans have been revealed for a city beach attraction on the banks of the River Torrens in central Adelaide.
The South Australian Government’s Renewal SA agency is seeking tenders for the urban beach project, designed to entice visitors and locals to the area between December and January.
Intended to be operational for the coming summer, the $180,000 beach could become a permanent attraction thereafter.
The project will offer a variety of “sand and water based activities for adults and children” which will be held day and night, as well as “high quality food and beverage offerings”, events and entertainment.
The location, which is yet to be decided, will also include a shaded seating area and childrens play zone, that will feature water play “in a way which allows safe unsupervised play from lifeguards”.
The size of the sanded area is up for discussion with Renewal SA requesting designers to allow for a volleyball court, swing tennis and a range of exercise opportunities including yoga and Pilates.
The tender documents also call for a “cool, relaxed vibe” for young professionals and families.
Introducing the project, South Australian Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan stated “what we’re hoping to do is get more people down to the Riverbank precinct.
“We’re hoping to give people more opportunity to access the water at the Torrens, whether that means people getting out on the paddle vessels or kayaks. That’s the sort of thing we want to see more of in the city, it’s one of the best parts of the CBD.”
Historically the River Torrens has played host to a range of aquatic activities with swimming competitions in the Torrens were an annual fixture on Adelaide's social calendar well into the 20th century.
The closing date for bids is 1st September.
