Segway sightseeing to roll into Adelaide’s Riverbank
The sights of Adelaide’s Riverbank precinct are to be showcased in a unique way with new segway tours planned from next year.
South Australian tourism company Segway Sensation SA has been given the all-clear to operate segways around Adelaide’s major tourist precinct, highlighting key attractions such as the Adelaide Oval.
The tours will operate along the Torrens Linear Park between the weir and Frome Road, taking in other major attractions including the Convention Centre, the Riverbank bridge, Adelaide Festival Centre and Adelaide Zoo.
The South Australian Government has enabled the tours by changing regulations under the Road Traffic Act to allow for segways to be used in a gazetted area under controlled conditions.
The change to this regulation was flagged as part of the Simplify Day Bill, which was introduced to the South Australian Parliament on 15th November in an effort to reduce red tape for South Australian businesses.
The Adelaide City Council is also supporting the segway tours with a 12-month Park Lands commercial business licence. Segway Sensation SA has been operating segway tours for the last two years at Seppeltsfield winery in the Barossa Valley and is looking to expand to other tourism hotspots including beachside suburbs.
The operation will see Segway Sensation SA run the guided segway tours from a base near the Torrens Weir with a focus on safety as well as fun.
Welcoming the new venture, South Australian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan stated “opening up the use of segways will provide additional opportunities for tourism operators like Segway Sensation SA to develop new tourism experiences and products to attract and increase both domestic and international visitors.”
Minister Mulligan sees that this venture is another example of the transformation of the Riverbank into a world class precinct, adding “it is home to much of the best of Adelaide, including the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide Convention Centre, Adelaide Festival Centre, Botanic Gardens and Adelaide Zoo.
“This is another way of promoting our landmark tourist attractions and to encourage even more people to travel to South Australia. Locals and visitors will now get to experience the sights of this iconic precinct in a unique way, by taking one of these guided segway tours.”
Segways are emissions-free and create no noise pollution, making them a perfect way to get around a city which aims to be the first carbon neutral city in the world.
Segway Sensation SA Tours also offer picturesque vineyards of Seppeltsfield.
