Torrens River footbridge a hit during Adelaide's Ashes Test
Thousands of cricket fans have taken the opportunity to test out the River Torrens footbridge during the 2nd Ashes Test at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval.
The partially-completed footbridge was temporarily opened between approximately 7am and 7pm for the first four days of the Test, leading to an estimated 170,000 people crossing over the new city landmark between Thursday and Sunday.
Following Australia claiming victory in the Test yesterday (9th December), the footbridge was closed with construction to continue between now and its permanent opening in March.
South Australian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the footbridge's first test has been a resounding success with positive feedback not just from cricket fans but locals and visitors who have come down to enjoy the atmosphere of the Riverbank precinct.
Minister Koutsantonis stated "we have had our first taste of just how good it is to have a direct link between public transport, the Riverbank and the redeveloped Adelaide Oval.
"Commuters who travelled into the city by train also got to experience the ease in which they'll now be able to get to cricket and football games.
"Watching the thousands of people cross the footbridge and spill straight into the Oval's Southern Plaza, it's hard to believe we ever got by without it.
"I have sensed a lot of pride from South Australians over the weekend. The redeveloped Adelaide Oval and the footbridge are proof that bigger and better things can happen, and are happening, in Adelaide."
With the footbridge's superstructure and concrete decking completed, granite decking, a glazed exterior, programmable lighting and water features at both ends will now be constructed.
Minister Koutsantonis said the footbridge will be fully functional when the Crows and Power play the first AFL game at the Adelaide Oval in March next year, adding "once complete, the footbridge will become a signature landmark within the Riverbank Precinct, allowing people to not just access football and cricket games at the Oval, but shops, restaurants, public spaces and other future developments."
