South Africans Shun Confederations Cup
Organisers of next yearâs FIFA World Cup have called on South Africans to turn up to football matches in the country, after poor attendances for Confederations Cup matches.
Reuters reported organising committee spokesman Rich Mkhondo as saying, âyou can take a horse to water but you can't force it to drink.
âWe have emphasised many times this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Our job is to stage the event but it is up to the South African nation to attend it.?
Less than 50,000 turned up to see South Africa play Iraq in the 61,000-seat Ellis Park stadium, Johannesburg on Sunday, and only around 21,000 attended
the Spain-New Zealand match the same day in Rustenburg.
