Snow falls kick start Australian ski season

After a stuttering start to the ski season in Australia and New Zealand, cold weather, storms and extensive snow falls have created perfect conditions for winter sport enthusiasts in recent weeks.

Heavy snow from mid June saw more than a metre of snow fall on Australia's alpine resort, resulting in the mid year school holidays offering fully operational resorts

As of Monday 23rd June, a Mt Hotham spokesperson explained "a blizzard has turned the mountain into a white wonderland in the space of a few hours."

On Monday 30th June, a Falls Creek spokesperson added "Falls Creek has enjoyed snowfalls (that) represent the biggest June snowfalls in over 20 years.

"With only one month down in winter 2014, this is shaping up to be a season to remember."

As of 10th July, Anthony O’Shea of Falls Creek Ski Lifts 2014 continued "it is not just the quantity of snow that has everybody talking – it’s the quality.

"The snow on the mountain at the moment is incredibly dry and light with many commenting that the conditions are as good as any they’ve experienced in northern hemisphere resorts.

“People think they have to travel to Japan, Canada or Europe to experience this kind of powder - we are so lucky to have access to these conditions right now in our own backyard allowing people to experience the fun with family and friends."

Mindful of competition, not just within Australia, but also from New Zealand, Thredbo, Perisher and the Merlin Entertainments managed Falls Creek and Mt Hotham have been making extensive use of social media in their marketing.
