Small grants initiative launched to help connect young people with sport clubs

The Papatoetoe Sports and Community Charitable Trust (PSCCT) has launched its 'Choose Sport' initiative backed by an audience of approximately 100 community sponsors and stakeholders.
Focussing on five to 18 year olds who intend to be members of sports clubs based in Papatoetoe, and that are registered to the Choose Sport initiative, the initiative provides financial assistance to children and young people to take part in club sport who would otherwise not participate because of financial hardship.
PSCCT General Manager Justin Leydesdorff explains "this initiative recognises the important role that sport and Sports Clubs can play in forming young people's lives by teaching them life skills and participating in community activities.
"Just like schools, Sports clubs can play a key role in the development of our young people and Schools are increasingly connecting with Sports Clubs to ensure that the good work they have invested in young people is continued by Clubs.
The Trust aims to provide at least 100 grants in the first year and is putting the onus on Schools and Sports Clubs to work together in identifying the most suitable applicants.
Leydesdorff adds "applications can only be submitted by approved referrers on behalf of the applicant. This ensures that the grants are helping the right families and will strengthen the relationships between Clubs, Schools and applicants families."
There are two closing dates for the 2012/2013 year 28th September 2012 and 15th March 2013.
