Singapore Indoor Stadium to close for further roof renovations

The Singapore Indoor Stadium (SIS) is to again close for a series of renovations to its leaking roof.

With events at the venue having been plagued by leaks during heavy rain in recent years, the arena will close afer the 2013 Li-Ning Singapore Open, the Republic's premier badminton tournament, in June.

It was during the 2010 Li-Ning Singapore Open, that rain leaks caused lengthy delays with buckets and towels used to prevent the water from affecting the courts.

After that event, gaps were resealed and the roof was waterproofed to prepare the venue for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (which ran from 14th to 26th August in that year).

The 24-year-old venue, with its unique turreted roof, has been going through a series of renovations to streamline the stadium with the upcoming Singapore Sports Hub.

Currently being managed by SportsHub Pte Ltd, the SIS will be closed from 9th July to 24th to September for various improvement projects, including fixing the leaky roof.

Responding to questions from local media, a spokesman from the SportsHub recently explained "included in these plans are interior roof, concession stand and restaurant renovations, as well as operational maintenance projects."

The two-and-a-half month closure will not affect eventsat the SIS with SportsHub Pte Ltd able to accommodate most acts that planned to go on at the venue in the period between July and September, by rescheduling.

SportsHub Pte Ltd is the company selected by the Singapore Sports Council to finance, build, and operate the new $1.33-billion facility at the 35-hectare site at Kallang, with the centrepiece being the new 55,000-capacity National Stadium.

When completed, the SIS will be completely integrated into the Sports Hub with a bridge linking the two venues.
