Significant snowfalls transform alpine resorts

Significant snowfalls across the Australian alps have transformed the region's ski resorts.

With icy winds and snow, along with wild surf and rain lashing Victoria and parts of NSW, flights have been grounded in Sydney and Melbourne while the Frankston Pier has broken from its moorings.

In the alps, Mt Buller saw 29cms of accumulate overnight with steady snowfall forecast across the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology continues to forecast blizzards and snow showers until Monday when the storm is expected to ease.

Skiers and boarders are excited to access more of the advanced terrain with Mt Buller confirming that 20 lifts will operate on Saturday with more runs opening on the heels of deep falls.

Mt Buller will host the Mogul Ski World Victorian Interschools Championships from 19th August and welcomes the Chicks with Stix this weekend.

Falls Creek has shivered through its biggest day of the season with an incredible 70cm of fresh snow in the past 48 hours.

With temperatures dropping to below minus 4 and extreme snow conditions, the resort has seen 47cm of snow overnight and has continued throughout the day.

Falls Creek has been fitting chains to all vehicles approaching the resort but has maintained an open approach.

It is expected the road to and from Falls Creek will remain open throughout the weekend where another potential 30-40cm has been predicted to fall.
