Shoalhaven Council delivers more pedestrian oriented areas and upgrades playgrounds

Shoalhaven City Council has recently reopened Tilbury Reserve at Culburra Beach following completion of the playground equipment and has advised that Council will also be commencing improvement works from Monday 11th October 2021 to make the Junction Court area more pedestrian-oriented.

Council’s Nowra CBD Revilisation Strategy Committee endorsed the Junction Court project following several months of design development. 

The concept for the upgrade, which features a ground mural over the paths and street, was prepared by landscape consultant Place Score, in consultation with Council’s staff and the Nowra CBD Revitalisation Strategy Committee including input from local business owners. 

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley said the key elements of the project included improving the look and feel of the precinct, improving pedestrian comfort and safety along with shading and seating installation and incorporating children play and activity areas.

Mayor Findley advised “I’m delighted to see the works get underway this month to transform the Junction Court area into a more community-friendly space to attract more visitors to Nowra CBD.

“The project was made possible as a result of a successful $935,000 State Government grant application under the Your High Street Grant Program.

“Whilst the works will see some disturbance to adjacent local businesses, we appreciate the community’s patience whilst these works are undertaken.”

Most of the construction work will be undertaken by Council’s own construction crews, supplemented by specialist sub-contractors as required.

Council also advise that the newly installed playground at Tilbury Reserve, Culburra Beach has reopened to the public and now features a swing set, nature play items, a play tower unit including three slides, inclusive spinner and rocker along with a shade structure.  

The replacement works also include the construction of a pathway surrounding the playground to enable access from the existing carpark and picnic area. 

The Council-funded project cost $160,000 and was completed in early September 2021. The project was funded through the Council’s Annual Playground Replacement Fund. 

Mayor Findley said that installation of accessible playground equipment at Tilbury Reserve meant that everyone in the community would benefit from the upgrade and added “Council is proud to offer over 128 playgrounds across the Shoalhaven. Our playgrounds provide inclusive places for young families and visitors to play and enjoy the outdoors together.”

Council engaged contractors, CRS Creative Recreation Solutions, to complete the works.

Last month Council completed playground replacement works at Blacket Park, St Georges Basin and at Fire Brigade Park, Erowal Bay.
