SGL takes on Sugarworld waterpark feasibility study
Cairns Regional Council has engaged Melbourne-based consultancy SGL Group to undertake a study into options for the redevelopment of the Sugarworld Waterpark.
The consultancy follows the April closure of the Council-owned facility as a result of structural problems in two of its waterslides and the Council's subsequent decision to investigate redevelopment options.
SGL will manage all aspects of the project on the Council's behalf including an extensive process of community engagement. This includes the public distribution of a fact sheet on waterpark options and opportunities for the community to get involved via email, a Facebook/blog site and to be updated via the Council's website.
The SGL (Simply Great Leisure) Group is an innovative and progressive Australasian sports, recreation, leisure, tourism and community planning consultancy.
The 2010/2011 Cairns Regional Council Sport, Recreation and Cultural Development budget includes the allocation of $4 million to the redevelopment of Sugarworld waterslides. Other highlights of $36.4 million budget include:
• Implementation of $800,000 of initial building projects for the Port Douglas Waterfront;
• $4.3 million for the Botanic Gardens visitors centre;
• $200,000 to be spent in renewing swimming pools;
• $4.1 million to be spent on providing sport and recreation services including lifesavers and stinger net protection.
Mayor Val Schier said Council's investment in the development and maintenance of a broad range of leisure and cultural activities will continue with the year's budget, offering vibrancy and enjoyment, attracting visitors and providing employment opportunity.
Mayor Schier explained "Council recognises that as well as residents valuing festivals and sporting events, these activities contribute to the wider local economy."
