Second waterslide for Coastlands Aquatic Centre
The soon to be completed Coastlands Aquatic Centre in Paraparaumu town centre is to have a second waterslide/hydroslide installed.
The $431,000 waterslide/hydroslide has been approved for purchase and installation at the $21 million facility in the next financial year by Kapiti Coast District Council. The second waterslide/hydroslide is part of $2 million planned additional spending at the aquatic centre including a removable disabled access ramp, hoist and timing equipment.
Uncertainty surrounding the installation of the locally designed stainless steel removable disabled access ramp has been removed in recent weeks with the Dutch manufacturers of the Coastlands Aquatic Centre's moveable pool floor, VarioPool, confirming that the ramp could be used without voiding warranties.
Kapiti Coast District Council Community Manager Tamsin Evans has welcomed this development, stating "there has been some concern about access for people with disabilities, so we are pleased to have reached this solution.
"VarioPool has previously stated a removable ramp was technically and operationally not workable with this moveable floor but they agreed to look at a New Zealand design and have advised they are happy for us to continue so long as the agreed procedure for getting the ramp in and out of the water is always followed."
The ramp will be used in the shallow (moveable floor) end of the pool and taken out as required for activities needing the whole pool at the full depth of 2.4 metres, such as water polo training and swimming competitions.
With construction and completion of the Coastlands Aquatic Centre delayed as a result of the main contractor for the project, Mainzeal, going into receivership at the beginning of February, the facility is now scheduled to open on 10th August.
