Mainzeal receivership delays Coastlands Aquatic Centre completion

More subcontractors are expected back at work on the Kapiti Coast District Council's Coastlands Aquatic Centre site in the coming week after the main contractor for the project, Mainzeal, went into receivership at the beginning of February.

About five of 30 contractors who have been working on the project returned to the site last week, and the Council, which is paying for most of the project, is assisting receivers PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) with negotations with other subcontractors.

Council Chief Executive Pat Dougherty said things seemed to be moving in the right direction, stating "we are getting real traction now, and I am optimistic we are getting close to a resolution we can live with.

"By next week we're aiming to be in a position whereby all parties understand what is required to complete the contract and we can confidently expect to see more work on the site."

PWC have been working on proposals to complete the $21 million project, with the Council helping PWC with its negotiations with subcontractors.

Facilities at the Paraparaumu venue, called Coastlands Aquatic Centre under a 10-year deal with a local shopping centre, will include a 25 x 25 x 2.4 metre multi-use pool with moveable floor; a learners' pool; a toddlers' pool; a spa; sauna and a hydroslide.

Meanwhile, it is hoped that a second stage will include a 50 metre Olympic pool with moveable bulkhead; a hydrotherapy pool; and a second hydroslide. The second stage will proceed if further funding can be secured.
