Sandgate Aquatic Centre reopens with new gym and indoor pool
Brisbane City Council's Sandgate Aquatic Centre has reopened after a 12 month long redevelopment that has seen the addition of a heated 25 metre and a gym with a yoga and Pilates training room overlooking the outdoor pool.
Located on the Sandgate Foreshore, the upgrade has also included additional change and storage rooms.
Reopened on 8th August, the rebuild of the site comes after a lengthy battle between Brisbane City Council, the lessees and a local business which claimed the rejuvenation of the site would have adverse impacts on the local community.
However, the Queensland Planning and Environment Court approved the plans to allow the reconstruction of the site in 2018.
Part of the redesign includes feature walls where imported Italian tiles tell the history of the Sandgate baths and pool, while swimming murals pay homage to Bondi Beach heritage of longtime leasee Craig Crozier.
Commenting on the expanded facilities, Crozier stated "it’s taken awhile to get here but the demand from the community and the response in building that health club and the indoor pool has been fantastic.
“I know there will be loads of kids learning to swim in there (the heated pool) and people are going to love it.
“We’ve been here since 2003 and a lot has changed in the 16 years but it’s a beautiful spot and it’s great to see it (the centre) be reinvigorated.”
The Sandgate Pool outdoor 50 metre pool and water play area remain closed for the winter season and will reopen next month.
