Rugby World Cup Ticket Prices Revealed
Organisers of the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) have announced the ticket prices for the event, saying the prices reflect the number of fans chasing a limited number of seats.
The organisers added that the ticket pricing strategy will fill the stadiums at the event, countering earlier concerns that the prices would be too high for locals.
Tickets for the final at Eden Park in Auckland will cost between NZ$390 and NZ$1,250 - NZ$55 more, on average, than tickets for the last RWC final, in 2007.
Adult ticket prices will range from NZ$30 for first round matches, with All Blacks fans having to pay nearly twice as much for tickets as those following some other teams in the qualifying pools.
Fans who want to follow New Zealand through all four pool matches will pay between NZ$430 and NZ$1,400, while those supporting South Africa in their equivalent matches will pay between $240 and $715.
In a statement, tournament Chief Executive Martin Snedden explained "we believe the ticketing policy will result in each match being played in front of full venues, showcasing New Zealand's love of rugby and its place as a host of major international events,?
âAlthough tickets for knockouts and major pool matches are expensive by New Zealand standards, we have been able to price two-thirds of matches at or below existing test match prices.?
Snedden pointed out that 10,000 of the seats for the final will be available at $390, and long-term payment plans will also make tickets more accessible.
Fans will be able to pay for tickets on instalment over six months.
Giant screens will be set up in 'live' locations so others can watch the games and all major matches will be broadcast live on free-to-air television.
Meanwhile the online auction site Trade Me says it will seek further talks with the tournament organisers to help prevent people from selling unwanted match tickets for more than face value.
Scalpers face a fine of NZ$5,000 under a new law, the Major Events Management Act.
