Perth’s ‘Adopt A Beach’ program among recipients of CoastWA grants

The Perth NRM 'Adopt A Beach' program has secured just over $50,000 to deliver school and community-based education activities to raise awareness of coastal values, threats, and hazards.

The funding is part of the Western Australian Government’s $3.38 million 2024-25 round of CoastWA grants across 32 projects to safeguard Western Australia's coastline from coastal hazards such as erosion and inundation.

19 grants totalling $822,897 have been awarded for Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) administered grants, to support local and regional coastal plans, reduce exposure to coastal hazards and enhance sustainable recreational and tourism. The remainder has been directed to grants administered by the Department of Transport.

The grants are one element of the CoastWA program, which is a collaboration between DPLH and Transport. CoastWA supports local governments, community organisations and other State Government agencies to plan, manage and respond to the increasing impacts of coastal erosion and inundation along WA’s coastline.

The 2024 CoastWA grants are part of a broader $33.5 million, five-year program dedicated to the sustainable management of Western Australia's 20,000-kilometre coastline.

These grants support coastal land managers and community groups in implementing critical conservation, education, and adaptation projects, enabling our coastal communities to increase their resilience to erosion and inundation.

Along with the Perth NRM Adopt A Beach program, other projects to receive 2024 grant funding include:

  • $1.66 million for construction of a seawall, access ramp and drainage at Cable Beach in Broome;

  • $200,000 for repairs and maintenance of the City Beach groynes in the Town of Cambridge;

  • $130,000 to the Town of Kwinana to review its coastal hazard risk management and adaptation plan to manage the impact of coastal hazards over the short, medium and long term.

Recipients will contribute more than $3.72 million in cash or in-kind contributions, effectively leveraging each grant dollar to maximise project impact.
