Royal Life recommends Aquatic Signage Upgrades

The Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA) is recommending that aquatic facilities upgrade their signage in accordance with the new Australian/New Zealand Standard 2416:2010 'Water safety signs and beach safety flags'.
The new standard, released at the end of last year, supersedes the former AS 2416:2002.
RLSSA highlight the key changes as being:
ï¾ AS 2416 has included a number of new signs for water safety. The list of signs included in the standard has been expanded so as to provide a more comprehensive list of water safety signs particularly for open and inland waterways.
ï¾ The design of several signs has been revised to reflect the International Standard. In an effort to promote international consistency, a number of signs included in the standard have been adopted from the International Standard. Most notably are the Deep Water warning symbol and the Drop Off symbol however most will vary in some way.
ï¾ Warning Signs included in the standard are of a new triangle shape. The standard signs included in the standard are designed in a triangle shape consistent with the International Standard. The new Standard does, however, allow for continued use of the diamond shape as long as the shape of the sign is consistent across all warning signs.
ï¾ The new AS2416 is more prescriptive in regards to the size and citing of signage. The new standard includes more detailed information regarding the positioning of signage as well as a formula to determine the appropriate size of signage based on the intended viewing distance and observer's line of sight.
In response to the changes, RLSSA recommends "that facilities update their signage. It is recognised that this may be difficult for some facilities to implement immediately, and so an implementation period will be adopted."
