Rocky mountain bike trail gets into gear

Work is set to begin on upgrading Rockhampton’s ‘First Turkey’ Mountain Bike Reserve, along Moore’s Creek, making it Central Queensland’s only state competition quality mountain bike facility.

One of 51 infrastructure projects receiving more than $79.2 million under Round 2 of the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program, which has attreacted a further $117.6 million investment from councils and other organisations, the project will complete the remaining elements of the First Turkey Mountain Bike Trails by constructing: mountain bike trails , a composting toilet, an outdoor learning centre, a bike competition event staging area, access for emergency services and signage.

Inspecting the start of works last week, Queensland Minister for State Development Dr Anthony Lynham said the $500,000 upgrade will cater to all skill levels of mountain bike riders, commenting “once complete, this sporting facility will enhance outdoor recreational opportunities for Rockhampton residents and improve visitor facilities for the adjacent Mount Archer National Park.

“This will be a recreational asset for the region and a significant tourist attraction, hosting local, regional and state level competitions.

“The mountain bike trails are fully integrated with the national park trail network and are also suitable for running and hiking, maximising the use of both areas

Dr Lynham acknowledged local contributions to the project, adding “I would like to thank Rockhampton regional Council for its $245,000 contribution to the project and the Rockhampton Mountain Bike club for its $5,000.”

Councils have until Friday 24th February to apply for a share of $70 million available under Round 3 of the Queensland Government's Building Our Regions program.
