‘Reusable’ stadium plan revealed for waterside FIFA 2022 World Cup venue

The organisers of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar have unveiled the design for what it claims is the event’s first ‘reusable’ stadium, the seventh of eight expected venues that will stage games during the 2022 tournament.

To be built on Doha’s southern waterfront, the 40,000 seat Ras Abu Aboud Stadium will host matches up to the quarter-final stage.

With modified shipping containers to be used in its construction, after the tournament the stadium will dismantled, with a vision for it to be reassembled and used elsewhere – potentially for sporting events in another country.

Announcing details of the design, Hassan al-Thawadi, Secretary-General of Qatar’s Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy stated “this venue offers the perfect legacy, capable of being reassembled in a new location in its entirety or built into numerous small sports and cultural venues.

“I’m delighted with this design and confident that Ras Abu Aboud will become a blueprint for future mega-event planners to follow.”

The seventh stadium design released for the 2022 competition, the design of the stadium was envisioned by Madrid, Spain-based Fenwick Iribarren Architects (FI-A) who have previously designed the Casablanca Football Stadium in Morocco, Norway’s new National Stadium and another tournament venue, the Qatar Foundation stadium.

Qatar has now revealed the designs for all venues expected to be used in 2022 except the Lusail Stadium, which will host the opening game and World Cup final.

The stadium should be completed by 2020.

In relation to its current diplomatic crisis with neighbouring Arabian Gulf nations including Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain, as well as Egypt, Thawadi said that the dispute had not “impacted” on Qatar’s preparations for the World Cup.
