Solar Power facility to be constructed for Tasmania’s Maria Island National Park
Tenders are now being called to design and construct a solar array and battery storage facility at Tasmania’s Maria Island.
Tasmanian Minister for Environment and Parks, Roger Jaensch notes “The new ground mounted solar array and custom built, air-conditioned battery storage facility will be located within the existing Parks and Wildlife Service workshop precinct, away from popular visitor locations.
“Due to its remoteness, the national park is not connected to the electricity power grid.
"These critical infrastructure works will ease demand on diesel power generation, in addition to providing greater capacity and a more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy supply.”
The new solar array will provide reliable power to the new pressure sewer system, the Darlington accommodation and for day-to-day operations on the Island.
This project is expected to provide two days of battery autonomy (an annual yield of 65 MWH).
The solar facility will take about six weeks to complete, subject to favourable weather conditions and the logistics of transporting machinery and equipment to the Island.
The work will be funded through the Maria Island Re-Discovered project – Tourism Infrastructure in Parks and Improving Statewide Visitor Infrastructure funds.
