Refurbished Margaret River’s Recreation Centre to reopen by Easter

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River has advised that it expects to reopen the doors of the refurbished Margaret River Recreation Centre on 25th March.

The Centre, and its pool, has been closed since late 2022 to undertake renovations and deliver a contemporary, functional centre which can serve our community into the future.

The $9 million renovation project was initiated by the need to address significant structural deterioration of the 25-year-old pool roof, although existing facilities have also been refurbished to improve accessibility and deliver a quality, durable and low maintenance building.

Key additional accessibility improvements include new accessible ramps at the centre’s entrance and reconstruction of the existing accessible toilets to current standards.

Changes to the scope of the project have also meant the intended timeframe of the project was extended. This included the rectifying extra deterioration to the pool which was discovered at the start of the project.

Shire President Julia Meldrum commented “at the start of the project, the builders discovered extra deterioration to the pool, which needed to be rectified.”

The council has advised that the builder is expected to hand over the building at the end of February, with the final stages of the project to include getting the building certified by relevant authorities as well as installing equipment and furniture.

The March reopening date follows earlier advise that the facility would be reopened in time for Christmas.
