Queenstown Lakes Council explores Wanaka pool options

Queenstown Lakes District Council is looking at options and costings for long-term swimming facilities in Wanaka, and is scheduled to make a decision at its 28th August Council meeting.

With the Council having recently approved emergency repairs at the Wanaka Community Pool, it is looking at choices ranging from refurbishing the existing community pool and adding a learners’ pool, to bringing forward the construction of a new 25 metre pool and learners’ pool as part of the planned Wanaka Sports Facility.

Mayor Vanessa van Uden said the Council had already agreed to spend $115,000 on temporary strengthening of the existing pool building, to bring it up to the minimum earthquake standard so it could reopen by the end of September.

The Council could also decide to spend around $55,000 more on extra strengthening that would extend the life of the pool for around five years.

All options would be on the table for consideration on 28th August, Mayor van Uden added, stating "(we have asked) for full costings to add a 25 metres pool and learners’ pool to the Wanaka Sports Facility that will be built at Three Parks.

"That will include capital costs, potential operating models and rating implications.”
