Port Douglas wildlife habitat launches new exhibit

Leading wildlife experience, The Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas, has opened a new exhibit the Savannah Habitat.

The new Habitat replicates North Queensland's Savannah country and will be the wildlife park's fourth distinct immersion exhibit, in addition to the existing Rainforest, Wetlands, and Grasslands Habitats.

Situated at the main entry to the wildlife park, the new Habitat features over 25 species of small birds such as finches, as well as smaller mammals and reptiles.

Wildlife Manager Clare Anderson said the exhibit would allow the park to showcase unique species that they haven't been able to previously, stating "the savannah will feature a range of smaller birds that would previously have gone unnoticed given their relative size in comparison to the majority of species within the other habitats.

"It's an exciting concept to be able to showcase some of the regions most beautifully coloured species and once again allow guests to see them up close."

The Savannah Habitat leads into the well-established Wetlands Habitat, which is home to the world's only breeding pair of black-necked storks (Jabirus) in captivity, Jabbie and James, who have just become parents yet again.

With this being their second clutch for the year and significantly later than usual, the first of two eggs hatched earlier in the week, with the second due in the next few days.

Jabbie and James have successfully raised over 10 offspring since they first bred back in 2001.

Wildlife Habitat provides visitors with a chance to observe up close a huge range of flora and fauna, including the only breeding colony of rare Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos in captivity.
