Port Augusta Central Oval being put to the test
With its official opening set for next month, Port Augusta’s new Central Oval Community and Sporting complex has been put to the test in recent months with the trial hosting of a number of successful community and sporting events.
The new venue has already hosted the Positive Ageing Expo, the RDAFN Trade Expo, Sci-World and the South Australian Regional Basketball Carnival along with several local conferences.
With the final part of the project, 11 netball courts, due for completion in the coming weeks, Port Augusta City Council has announced that will complete the $14.5 million project within budget.
The venue’s master plan, completed by Adelaide-based consultancy One Eighty was successful in securing $5 million from the South Australian Government, $5 million from the Federal Government and $6 million from the Port Augusta City Council.
The facility includes an AFL standard football oval, changerooms, netball courts, multi-use stadium, function area for up to 600 patrons, indoor multi-purpose courts and a café.
With building work undertaken by Badge Constructions, Council’s works and parks department staff have been involved in civil construction of the building surrounds, undertaking works including carpark construction; entranceway upgrade; construction of planter beds; retaining walls; fences; signage; line marking; realigning and extension of oval and lawn areas; irrigation changes to the oval; irrigation and loam installation in garden beds around the site; and AridSmart plant selection by Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden staff.
The facility provides an important entertainment venue for Port Augusta and unites the city’s AFL and netball in one location.
Commenting on the later development, South Australian Recreation and Sport Minister Leon Bignell recently commented "Port Augusta locals are really excited about netball and football coming back together at the one location for the first time in over 30 years."
A defribulator has also been installed at the complex - equipped with instructions on its use on anyone suffering cardiac arrest.
