Work Commences at Marion Aquatic Centre
Preliminary work on South Australia's $100 million Aquatic Centre and GP Plus Health Care Centre has began.
The long awaited aquatic centre, in the Adelaide suburb of Marion, is scheduled for completion in 2010.
It will feature:
• A 50 metre 10 lane swimming pool;
• A 55 metre diving/water polo pool with a boom;
• Seating for 4,500 people; and
• Leisure water of 1,000 metre2 including a learn to swim pool.
South Australian Sports Minister Michael Wright said the centre would be one of the most technically advanced competition and training venues in the southern hemisphere explaining "this facility will see Adelaide recognised as Australian swimming's latest destination ... it's a hugely exciting project.
"The concept images and plans I've seen for this project are very impressive and certainly world class.
"We'll soon be seeing a fantastic new sport and health hub for South Australians that sends a strong message that we continuing to defy the global downturn and our state remains open for business."
The GP Plus Health Care Centre will offer a wide range of health services, including dental, heath and counselling for young people, early childhood development services and health services for older people.
Candetti Constructions was selected by the South Australian Government as design and construction contractor for the project.
