Poor ticket sales sees cancellation of Groovin The Moo regional festivals

Just two months out before its first 2024 event in South Australia, Cattleyard Promotions, the organisers of the Groovin The Moo festival, have cancelled the regional tour citing poor ticket sales.

Traditionally one of Australia’s popular music festivals, organisers announced the cancellation just two weeks after revealing the tour line-up.

The latest in a string of music festivals that have cancelled citing difficult economic conditions hampering ticket sales combined with rising costs.

Announcing the cancellation, organisers advised on social media “we are extremely disappointed to announce that the Groovin the Moo 2024 tour has been forced to cancel.

“Ticket sales have not been sufficient to deliver a regional festival of this kind. All tickets will be refunded automatically.

“Thank you to everybody who has supported the festival. We hope to be able to bring Groovin the Moo back to regional communities in the future.”

Marketing publication Mumbrella suggested that the future of Groovin The Moo had been placed in doubt when the festival’s booker Rich Moffat announced on Monday on social media that he will “step away and retire from formal booking roles / music business in 2024”, adding that it “feels time to make some space for others to take charge as curators of future events.”

The festival was set to launch in late April and run through until mid-May in venues across South Australia, the ACT, Victoria, NSW and Queensland. The cancellation is expected to impact each of these regional locations.

Acts on the program included big-name and emerging Australian acts like Jet, DMA’S, Alison Wonderland and The Jungle Giants, as well as international names like GZA of iconic rap outfit Wu-Tang Clan, The Kooks and Melanie C of the Spice Girls.

The only time the festival cancelled previously in its 19-year history was during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
