Plan to get more Aucklanders active
Giving Aucklanders opportunities to be more physically active more often is the goal of a new initiative launched by Mayor Len Brown and Auckland's sport and recreation sector.
The 10-year Auckland Sport and Recreation Strategic Plan aims to boost participation, improve infrastructure and support excellence across the Auckland region.
The plan was developed by independent advisory group OneVoice: Sport & Recreation and Auckland Council.
Introducing the initiative, Mayor Brown stated "the sport and recreation sector is a huge part of our economy and lifestyle in Auckland, contributing around $1.2 billion per annum to our region's GDP.
"But while we pride ourselves on being a great city for sport and recreation, there are still too many Aucklanders who lead an inactive lifestyle, with the annual cost of physical inactivity in Auckland estimated at $400 million.
"This plan gives will allow us to increase opportunities for all Aucklanders to be involved in physical activity, and ensure we are making best use of region's resources."
OneVoice Chairperson Colin Dale says the plan marks an exciting time for the sport and recreation sector and Auckland, adding "this is a comprehensive plan that focuses on all aspects of recreation and sport from grassroots participation through to elite sports for people of all ages as well as recognising the needs of our diverse communities and growing population."
The plan identifies actions under four priority areas:
• Participation – more Aucklanders living physically active lives through participation
• Infrastructure – developing access to open spaces and harbours, coastlines and waterways and a fit –for-purpose network of facilities enabling physical activity, recreation and sport
• Excellence in recreation and sport –helping build pride in the region's recreation and sporting achievements, talent nurtured and excellence celebrated
• Sector development – having a sector that is strong and capable to deliver quality sport and recreation experiences in a sustainable way.
