P!nk's popularity etched in stone
P!nk's incomparable popularity in Melbourne was etched in stone before her 18th and final record breaking concert at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday (25th August).
When P!nk performed 17 concerts in 2009, smashing John Farnham's mark for the number of concerts in a single tour at the same venue, it seemed inconceivable her record would ever be surpassed. Yet, as testimony to a vast catalogue of hits and spectacular stage persona, P!nk has again captivated the city's music loving public to go one better.
Melbourne and Olympic Parks Chief Executive, Brian Morris, said the response from Victorians had exceeded expectations and it was only fitting that several commemorative initiatives had been introduced to celebrate and honour P!nk's record feat.
Morris explained "we are thrilled that Melbourne has again embraced such an amazing talent in P!nk.
"To have 18 shows in a single tour is something very unique to Rod Laver Arena and our staff, event partners and importantly our patrons are extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this outstanding achievement."
At the venue's main public entry a Hollywood style P!nk star now takes pride of place. Inside the Arena, door number 18 has been uniquely painted pink, complemented by a signed plaque. Backstage, another Pink pole stands alongside the one from her previous record breaking Funhouse tour. And as she left her dressing room for the last time last night, P!nk signed a plaque located on a wall leading to the stage.
Throughout P!nk's Melbourne run Rod Laver Arena has left no doubt as to the artist's on-going residency, with the Arena's exterior lit up vibrant pink, in addition to a giant bespoke sign and bank of banners.
The Truth About Love Tour has been an Australian phenomenon with a total of 46 shows and more than 600,000 ticket sales nationally. But it is in Melbourne in particular where P!nk's adoration knows no bounds, with 18 dynamic sold-out shows in front of a collective audience approaching a quarter of a million.
