Perth Cultural Centre lights up for Christmas

The Western Australian Government is lighting up the Perth Cultural Centre with Illuminites, a free Christmas celebration to be held from 9th to 16th December.

Western Australian Culture and the Arts Minister John Day says that the event will offer a range of festive activities, late night exhibitions and live entertainment to entertain city workers, Christmas shoppers and visitors to the city.

Minister Day explained "the Urban Orchard will be transformed into a supper club featuring world cuisine and live music, while on the Wetland stage local bands programmed by RTR-FM will perform throughout the night.

"An 'upcycled' Christmas tree, made from recycled bicycles and lit from within, will be a focal point of the cultural centre as Christmas carols on the LED screen, homemade decorations and local designer markets add to the seasonal atmosphere.

"The shops along William Street will be trading late and the Princely Treasures exhibition at the Art Gallery of WA and Alternating Currents at PICA will also stay open later than usual."

The Minister said the centrepiece of Illuminites was a light-based art show that would add an element of surprise and excitement to the evening as night falls, adding "Still Life, by local artist Philip Gamblen, will utilise the giant LED screen and digital feature lighting in the Perth Cultural Centre to screen and project a series of vignettes around the space," he said.

"The Perth Cultural Centre is becoming one of the city's premier events' destinations and a community meeting place.

"The State Government has spent more than $17million to transform the area into a vibrant and active destination that offers something to attract people of all ages."
