Optus Stadium celebrates one millionth visitor as AFL attendances hit new highs
Optus Stadium welcomed its one millionth visitor ahead of last weekend’s Fremantle versus Adelaide AFL clash, as the ground celebrates recording the second-highest average AFL attendance in the country, behind only the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
After 12 AFL matches at Optus Stadium, the venue had an average attendance of 48,625 - second only to the MCG’s 54,239 attendance average.
The average attendance for AFL matches represents a 41% increase in AFL football attendance in Western Australia, following the move from Subiaco Oval to Optus Stadium.
Welcoming Neil Alweyn as the venue’s one millionth guest at the weekend, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray marked the milestone by presenting four tickets to an upcoming event of their choice and a voucher for City View Café.
Neil Alweyn and his friends were escorted by the Minister to upgraded seats in the Premiership Terrace, where they were able to watch the match, courtesy of the Fremantle Football Club.
Optus Stadium is also celebrating an average visitor satisfaction rating of more than 90%, with guests at Ed Sheeran’s two concerts in March reporting an 89% satisfaction rating, rising to 94% more recently at the Western Derby on 29th April.
Commenting on the achievement, Minister Murray stated “six months after the opening of Optus Stadium, we are second only to the MCG in terms of AFL crowds, with 41% more Western Australians enjoying live AFL football each week.
“The high customer satisfaction ratings, which rose to 94% at the most recent measure, are testament to the quality of the venue and the people running it.”
As of next week, fans heading Optus Stadium can make use of an alternative transport option to access the venue and surrounding precinct via ferries operating from the new $5 million Burswood Jetty.
Private ferry services to the stadium will be in place for the first weeknight fixture on Thursday 21st June 2018 after Captain Cook Cruises - owned by Sealink - secured exclusive access to a dedicated berth at the new facility for major events at Optus Stadium and priority access for the remainder of the time.
On an event day, Captain Cook Cruises is expected to pick up and drop off up to 1,440 people on two return services across five vessels.
In addition, other charter operators and the public can use the additional two berths for drop off and pick up of patrons, further enhancing the capacity of the jetty to deliver people to the Optus Stadium precinct.
