Old Royal Adelaide Hospital redevelopment to include contemporary art gallery

The redevelopment of the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site could include a new museum of contemporary art and nearby underground concert hall.

With the South Australian Government having revealed plans for the $1 billion redevelopment of the soon-to-be-redundant hospital site in the past week, Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser has today revealed that a small part of the 2.04 hectares of land to be handed to the Adelaide Botanic Garden would be used as the site of a stylised $250 million ‘white box’ contemporary art gallery.

The newspaper has published plans by the preferred developer, Adelaide-based C & G, for an elevated two-level art gallery and underground concert hall sloping over three levels.

The Advetiser reports “it is understood the art gallery plans were prepared by C & G as part of its successful bid document and, informally dubbed the white box, are being circulated within senior levels of Government.

“The Gallery, which could house some of the Art Gallery of South Australia’s extraordinary collection of indigenous and contemporary art, is being touted as an “eastern bookend” to the North Terrace cultural boulevard.”

A steering group of prominent Australians, chaired by former Sydney Opera House Director Michael Lynch, is currently considering options for a new contemporary cultural institution.
