Official opening for Globe Theatre in Palmerston North
After several months of redevelopment the Globe Theatre in Palmerston North has reopened.
The $1.2 million redevelopment has seen the venue upgraded with the addition of a café/bar and a 100 seat flat floor auditorium that will be used for performances, training and rehearsal space.
Commenting on the completion of the project, Palmerston North City Council Mayor Jono Naylor said the Globe is an icon of the Palmerston North performing arts community.
Mayor Naylor explained “for many years it has performed very well, but it was time for an upgrade. The new facilities are fantastic and will serve our community well for many years to come and will allow another generation of performers to share their talents with us.
“I offer my congratulations to all who have been involved in bringing this project together."
In addition to backing from the Council, the redevelopment was funded by a remarkable range of contributions from the local community and businesses including the Eastern and Central Community Trust making a $100,000 donation, New Zealand Community Trust donating $50,000, Infinity Trust donating $15,000, Central Energy Trust donating $289,000 and the NZ Lotteries Community Facilities Fund donating $500,000.
The re-opening of the Theatre heralds the start of an impressive line-up of local and international theatre productions and concerts.
Globe Theatre Manager Bruce Warwick added “Globe’s journey began in 1983 and over the years thousands of local actors, singers and musicians have entertained and thousands of Manawatu folk have loved coming here.
“Together the Palmerston North City Council and The Globe Theatre Trust Board are delighted to be breathing new life into the re-constructed Globe and showcasing the talent in our community. Here’s to many more enjoyable nights on Main Street!”
