NSW Government to fund $111 million PCYC in Parramatta
The NSW Government has announced that it will deliver a new home for the PCYC in Parramatta under the WestInvest program, complementing the sporting and entertainment precinct at CommBank Stadium.
The $111 million five-storey building will include dance and music studios, a homework hub, indoor gyms and multi-sports courts. The facility will also include before- and after-school care facilities, along with boxing and martial arts studios.
Advising of the funding, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet stated “this Government’s urban renewal program in the Parramatta LGA has delivered new transport, cultural and sporting facilities.
“This new state-of-the-art facility, funded by WestInvest, will provide a new venue that is tailored to the growth, health and wellbeing of the region’s young people.”
The PCYC NSW will be the anchor tenant in the new building, which will occupy a vacant site between CommBank Stadium and Parramatta Leagues Club on the city’s O’Connell Street.
NSW Treasurer Matt Kean said the new facility will support the PCYC to continue its invaluable work with young people in the community, noting “the PCYC delivers a range of life-changing programs that support young people across NSW including helping them get ready for jobs, providing mentoring and working to reduce crime.
“This funding is in addition to the $25.4 million the WestInvest program has provided Blacktown City Council to upgrade the PCYC Mount Druitt Youth Centre into a first-class sporting and community hub to support young people through education, training and mentoring.”
PCYC NSW Chief Executive, Dominic Teakle added “our clubs provide for the wellbeing and fitness of the community, while providing life-changing programs in partnership with NSW Police in a safe place. PCYC teaches life skills to young people, which creates hope for a better future.
“The WestInvest funding will allow PCYC to provide fit for purpose indoor sport and recreation facilities that serve the needs of the growing needs of this vibrant City of Parramatta.”
Australasian Leisure Management has learned that the PCYC South Sydney, located in the suburb of Redfern, is to be demolished and replaced by a social housing development.
PCYC is a youth charity that has been serving the community for 86 years, and in Parramatta since 1962.
