Local partnerships drive community move to bring PCYC to Grafton
The power of community partnerships has been showcased and celebrated with representatives from PCYC NSW having joined by local young people, NSW Police, State MP Chris Gulaptis, Clarence Valley Mayor Jim Simmons and key community stakeholders to announce the development of a new PCYC facility in Grafton at the Grafton Sports Centre site.
Announced last week, the state-of-the-art facility is a result of Clarence Valley Council, Coffs Clarence Police Command and donors like the John Laing Foundation and Serco wanting to support the youth and community in Clarence Valley to get active in life and build community resilience.
Speaking at the announcement of the redevelopment on Thursday 20th December, PCYC NSW Chief Executive Dominic Teakle stated “PCYC NSW is committed to delivering a modern, fit-for-purpose community sport and recreation facility for the entire community of Clarence Valley, with a focus on providing a place of recreation, activity and belonging for local young people.
“We are proud to be part of this project and grateful that the Grafton community has embraced PCYC so enthusiastically. PCYC NSW was founded 81 years ago on a foundation of partnerships – between Police and Rotary working within the community. This tradition remains strong today and PCYC Grafton is a great example of what can be achieved through genuine passion, unwavering determination and strong community and Police partnerships. We are better together.”
Clarence Valley Mayor, Jim Simmons said a PCYC in Grafton would be of enormous benefit to young people living in the Clarence Valley.
Mayor Simmons added “there has been an interest and steady push for a PCYC here for at least 10 years and I couldn’t be happier that it is now on its way.
“In just over 12 months we have seen a new headspace open, the Clarence Youth Action team really hit its stride and the Our Healthy Clarence team deliver great services for the young.
“Together these services provide a wonderful opportunity for the youth of the Clarence.”
PCYC will be working with the local Council, Police and community to provide a facility where young people can stay active in life, connect with others and reach their full potential.
Clarence Valley locals can have their say through the PCYC NSW Community Consultation Survey. Feedback provided will help shape plans for the new PCYC Grafton and will inform the services and activities which will be delivered in the new facility.
