NSW Government partners with Football Australia to secure four-nation tournament

Ahead of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, the NSW Government has partnered with Football Australia to secure the four-nation tournament - The Cup of Nations - exclusively for NSW taking place in Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle this February.

The Cup of Nations includes three double-header matchdays where the Matildas will take on fellow World Cup contenders Spain, Jamaica and the Czech Republic.

NSW Minister for Sport Alister Henskens notes “we’re encouraging fans from far and wide to come along and cheer on our home town heroes in what will be three action-packed days of football right here in NSW and is set to inspire future generations of football superstars."

NSW Minister for Tourism Ben Franklin adds “securing events like the Cup of Nations attract the world’s best players, officials and supporters to NSW, who stay in our hotels, visit our attractions and spend in our retail stores, restaurants, bars and cafes.”

The tournament adds to NSW’s calendar of summer sport events including the recent United Cup tennis, the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, SailGP and the return of HSBC Sydney Sevens ahead of the FIFA Women's World Cup in July and August.

Football Australia Chief Executive James Johnson said he is delighted with these opportunities for the Australian public to experience world class football and cheer on the Matildas and their football heroes in the lead up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.

“February’s Cup of Nations will be one of the final opportunities for fans to see the CommBank Matildas on home soil before the commencement of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July,” Johnson said.

“Three of the four sides will be aiming for success at the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, and we expect the quality of the six matches to be world class.”

The 2023 Cup of Nations match schedule includes:

  • Matchday One - Thursday 16th February, Industree Group Stadium Gosford;

  • Matchday Two - Sunday 19th February, CommBank Stadium Sydney; and

  • Matchday Three - Wednesday 22nd February, McDonald Jones Stadium Newcastle.

For full details and tickets for the Cup of Nations can be found at the Matildas website.
