NSW Government Commits to WIN Stadium Development
The NSW Government will spend $28.9 million to build a new Western Grandstand at Wollognong's WIN Stadium.
NSW Premier Nathan Rees announced the approval of a plan to replace the current 50 year old grandstand with a new two-tiered stand of 6,170 seats, boosting overall capacity of the Stadium by 3,758 seats to 23,150.
The project, which it is envisaged will take three years to fully complete, will include a small refurbishment to the Stadium's Southern Grandstand and new corporate, player, media and leasable facilities.
Construction will not unduly impede use of the Stadium, during the construction period, by the St George-Illawarra Dragons, the Illawarra Steelers, Wollongong Community Football Club and other users.
The funding announcement follows a long community fight for the replacement of the dilapidated stand, dating back over the last 10 years.
As Premier Rees explains "the massive investment will bring WIN Stadium up to world-class standard and allow Wollongong to compete for a range of national and international sporting and entertainment events."
The new Grandstand concept has been favourably received by the Government, the business, tourism and union sectors and the Stadiumâs major users, the Dragons.
