Northern Territory 30 year parks masterplan released

A 30 year masterplan outlining the strategic direction for the Northern Territory Government’s 85 parks and reserves has been released, providing long-term certainty and purpose to park management, Traditional Owners, Territorians and potential investors.

Also released alongside the Masterplan is the Northern Territory Parks 10 Year Activation Plan, which maps out infrastructure development for the first decade of the Masterplan.

Parks and reserves contribute enormously to the social, cultural and economic fabric of the Territory, and are vital to its future.

The Masterplan has been informed by extensive community and stakeholder consultation, and Territorians have shown they are passionate about their Parks and Reserves, making up 96% of nearly 600 submissions on the initial discussion paper.

It provides a strategic framework to guide future programs, projects and partnerships, that will conserve the natural environment, maintain cultural values and provide opportunities for new and enhanced visitor experiences.

NT Minister for Parks and Rangers, Nicole Manison notes “Our parks and reserves are highly valued places for Territorians to relax and enjoy, and are a drawcard destination for visitors to experience the best of the Territory’s natural and cultural heritage.

"The Parks masterplan will deliver new tourism infrastructure, maintain the great outdoor lifestyle of Territorians, support Aboriginal economic development, as well as protect biodiversity and cultural values.

"This is an exciting initiative, as we work together to deliver measurable targets for the short, medium and long term, that ensure our parks are protected well into the future and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.”

Nine key themes have been identified, that will guide the effort and resourcing of the parks estate for the next 30 years – access the full masterplan here
