New small watercraft launch facility opens in Sutherland

Sutherland Shire has recently opened a new small craft launch facility providing safe access for kayakers, rowers and paddlers looking to explore the Port Hacking area.

The facility at Lugano Avenue at Burraneer includes a new launching ramp to provide better access to the water and improved safety for users of small craft such as kayaks, canoes and surf skis.

While ongoing Federal and State Government restrictions apply for those venturing out to exercise, Sutherland Shire Council Mayor Carmelo Pesce said activities like kayaking, rowing or stand-up paddle boarding were a fantastic way to be active while adhering to social distancing measures.

Mayor Pesce said the new facility would enable local paddlers greater opportunity to take to one of the most spectacular waterways in the Sutherland Shire and noted that “by providing a launch point for non-powered watercraft, we are providing better access for local residents to take to the water and enjoy our stunning surrounds.

“This is a fantastic facility which will make a real difference in ensuring activities like kayaking and canoeing are both safe and accessible for all those who enjoy grabbing a paddle and hitting the water.”

Mayor Pesce added “Sutherland Shire Council has been very mindful of the need to ensure local residents still have opportunities to get out and exercise in our beautiful natural surrounds while ensuring that health guidelines are also being adhered to.”

The new launch facility was jointly funded by Sutherland Shire Council and the NSW Government’s Boating Now program which provides boaters with better and safer access to NSW waterways with upgrades and new infrastructure such as boat ramps, jetties and pontoons.

Member for Cronulla Mark Speakman noted “the small craft launching facilities are a new initiative for Sutherland Shire Council to provide improved access by building dedicated small craft launching ramps in unique public foreshore locations where traditional boat ramp access is not feasible.

“The Lugano Avenue launch point is designed for non-powered craft to have their own dedicated launching and landing areas a safe distance away from the existing boatshed and ramp. Previously this popular site was serviced by a small set of concrete stairs leading to the water.”
