New Perth stadium to have potential for 80,000 capacity

The Western Australian Government has announced that its new sports stadium at Burswood could potentially be expanded to 80,000 capacity.

The ground is also set to be one of the longest in the country, at 165 metres long (five metres longer than both the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne's Etihad Stadium but 10 metres shorter than Perth's existing Patersons Stadium, which is 175m long) and will be 130 metres.

The $700 million stadium is also set to include a range of luxury suites and 'field club' facilities similar to those offered at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Similar boxes are found at American football's Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

With construction to begin in early 2014, the finished stadium will initially seat 60,000 people, but will be built to enable future expansion. Adding a extra tier along each side of the ground would add 10,000 seats on each wing.

Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett explained "this will be a massive step forward, not only for football, but for all major sporting events in this state."

$375 million was committed to the project in the recent Western Australian state Budget.
