New Northern Territory Government cuts tourism department head

Changes to the Northern Territory Public Service, which will see major departments reduced from 23 to 15, have seen the sacking of Tourism NT Chief Executive Tony Mayell.

The new Government of Chief Minister Michael Gunner is restructuring the public service to generate $5 million in savings this year and an ongoing savings of $15 million year over year from 2017/18.

Mayall is one of four department/agency chief executives sacked this week with major departments to be grouped together into four ‘clusters’, including Chief Minister, Children and Families, Development and Tourism, and Environment and Culture.

Chief Minister Gunner explained “these changes are necessary to meet the goals I campaigned and was elected on.

“It’s essential that Territorians get what they voted for.”

Michael Tennant will now be the lead Chief Executive for all the portfolios across the Development spectrum, Ken Davies will leave Education to head up Children and Families, Alastair Shields will lead Tourism, Environment and Culture, and former under-treasurer Jodie Ryan will lead the Chief Minister department until a suitable replacement can be found, expected at the end of the year.

In advance of the full election results having been completed and in advance of ministerial responsibilities being announced, Chief Minister Gunner currently has responsibility for the Tourism, Economic Development and Major Projects, Environment, Arts and Museums, Sport and Recreation and Parks and Wildlife portfolios.
