New Commission aims to revitalise NT Tourism

The establishment of a tourism commission for the Northern Territory will aim to revitalise the industry for the Territory's 700 tourism related businesses.

Northern Territory Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Matt Conlan has steered legislation through the Territory Parliament that will see Tourism NT reconstituted as a Commission.

Stating that the Commission will grow the tourism sector by bringing a new depth of expertise, Minister Conlan said the Government is determined to see the Territory marketed as one product, 'The Northern Territory'.

Minister Conlan explained "the Commission will bring new rigour and a depth of expertise to grow our tourism sector.

"This will see a strong focus on product development and marketing.

"Commissioners will be sought with experience and knowledge in the industry.

Air North Chief Executive Michael Bridge has been appointed Chair of the Commission while long-time Territory tourism administrator Tony Mayell will join as Chief Executive in December.

Concluding, Minister Conlan stated "this is the first step in returning tourism to the powerhouse industry in the Territory that it once was."
