New netball facility opens in Canberra
Four new netball courts in Canberra's Gungahlin suburb of Jacka have opened - supporting the growing number of people playing the popular sport in the ACT.
Netball is the number one sport for women and girls in the ACT.
The construction of the facility is part of an ongoing ACT Government investment into netball in Canberra with a program of works to upgrade all five district netball facilities in the ACT worth $7 million currently underway.
ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry noted “the opening of the Jacka netball courts follows the completion of upgrades at the Arawang District Netball Facility in Stirling and the Canberra District Netball Facility in Lyneham.
“The early delivery of the four netball courts at Jacka, provides an important community sport and recreation facility for local residents.
“The next stage of the district netball facility upgrades project commenced last month at South Canberra (Deakin), Tuggeranong (Calwell) and Belconnen (Charnwood) District Netball Associations.
“Works at each site include court replacement and drainage improvements and are expected to be completed in March 2025, in time for the start of the winter netball season.
“Netball is one of the Canberra’s largest sports with over 12,000 participants and these new facilities in the Gungahlin district, as well as the newly improved existing courts around Canberra, will ensure that players are able to access appropriate new and improved courts across the city,” said Minister Berry.
The courts have been designed in accordance with the Netball Australia Technical Standards and are suitable for training and competition. A second stage is planned to deliver an additional eight netball courts, LED lighting for night play and a pavilion.
The fenced courts are now available for hire through the ACT Government Sportsground Booking System. The courts are not locked allowing the community to use the facility when not booked for formal netball activities.
Sally Clark, Chief Executive, Netball ACT enthused “Netball ACT is excited to see the four new netball courts at Jacka open to the community. Netball is the number one sport for women and girls in the ACT and with the population expanding in the north it is fantastic that the ACT government has supported this growth with appropriate sporting facilities.”
