New lifeguard service proposed for Bokarina bathing reserve

Sunshine Coast Council has progressed its plan to introduce a lifeguard service at Bokarina from September 2020 by commencing community consultation on the proposed bathing reserve.

In August, Stockland officially opened a fully accessible public pathway through the dunes to Bokarina’s beach as well as a timber viewing deck, seating, bike racks and shower facility as part of requirements for its development at Bokarina.

For a patrolled beach to be established, council must apply to the Queensland Government for the gazettal of a bathing reserve at Bokarina.

Council endorsed a recommendation at its Ordinary Meeting on 22nd August to apply for the gazettal of a bathing reserve by extending the existing Wurtulla bathing reserve by approximately 700 metres north to beach access 245. This will bring the total bathing reserve length to approximately one kilometre to accommodate both the Wurtulla and Bokarina beach lifeguard services.

Wurtulla lifeguard services will not change as a result of the application.

The proposed extension of the bathing reserve north to beach access 245 means the dog-off leash area also requires amendment and this is currently out for comment as part of the local law review.

Community consultation has opened and runs until 8th October, 2019.
