Port Kembla beach to improve access and safety

Wollongong City Council will be undertaking work on the sand dunes on Port Kembla beach to improve access and safety for lifesaving and rescue equipment.

Council has been talking with community groups including members of the local Surf Life Saving Club to enhance their access to the beach.

Works are due to begin in Mid-May and will take about eight-weeks, but this will be dependent on weather, tide and sea conditions. The area will be fenced off during the works and access to the beach will be changed.

Access tracks to the south of the work area will allow use of the open sections of beach. The Beach Works and Access Changes map will be displayed at various locations surrounding the work site prior to and during the project.

Dune re-profiling works will be undertaken over a 200metre stretch of the dunes and beach at the northern end of Port Kembla beach. The higher elevation areas of the dune will be re-profiled and low growing vegetation will be planted to assist in the stabilisation of the sand. Excess sand will be placed up to 500metre south of the dune re-profiling work.

These works are part of Council’s ‘Dune Management Strategy for the Patrolled Swimming Areas of 17 Beaches’, which outlines options to make patrolled areas safer and improve access and recreational amenity.
