More live music in inner Sydney

A series of upcoming concerts at Glebe Town Hall will give locals a chance to enjoy quality live gigs close to home.

Nine concerts will be staged in the historic Glebe Town Hall this year after the City opened it and other Council buildings to artists as part of its recent Live Music and Performance Action Plan.

Hinterlandt Ensemble, a cello, violin, guitar and trumpet group that combines chamber-style compositions with a hip edge, will play Glebe Town Hall’s first-floor ballroom next month.

Other established artists set to rock Glebe Town Hall include Mic Conway, David Bridie and Crooked Fiddle.

Commenting on the expansion of live music, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore stated "supporting live music is one of the City’s top cultural priorities.

“The Live Music and Performance Action Plan supports our creative performers and gives residents and visitors more entertainment options, especially at night.

“We’re delighted to support concerts that are helping bring Glebe Town Hall to life after the City’s major restoration in 2013, which included soundproofing for events just like this.”

Independent music promoter Places and Spaces is staging the gigs with the help of a City of Sydney cash grant of $25,000 and discounted venue hire.

The gigs are helping local and interstate artists reach inner city audiences and giving local music lovers more live entertainment options in an impressive inner-city venue.

Place and Spaces Director Joanne Kee added “we will change the genres around to cater for as many tastes as possible.

“We are also helping to test out the venue for live performances.”

Part of the City’s $6.8 million restoration of Glebe Town Hall included making it more accessible; repairing water damage to the façade; restoring the clock tower to working order; and installing a lift with an impressive glass façade.

Budding musicians and performers will get free access to community venues to other town halls and council facilities as part of the Live Music and Performance Action Plan.

City-owned buildings in nine city villages are being opened to primary school, high school, university and TAFE students for music, theatre, dance and other forms of performance rehearsal.
