Milson Island Sports Pavilion on World's best Sport Building shortlist
A modest $2.7 million sports pavilion was recently shortlisted for the best Sports Building award at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona.
The Sports Pavilion at the Milson Island Sport and Recreation Centre was competing against major new sports stadia from the UK, Germany, Spain and the Middle East - projects with an average value of $300 million - in comparison to the Milson Island project which cost just $2.7 million.
With over 800 entries from 60 countries, the Milson Island Sports Pavilion, designed by Sydney-based practice Allen Jack+Cottier, was one of 10 shortlisted finalists.
Allen Jack+Cottier are no strangers to the prestigious award having won it in 2009 for the Berry Sports Hall, NSW.
Allen Jack+Cottier Architects Principal Michael Heenan explains that the shortlisting was "a remarkable repeat of history, a modest sports pavilion for (the NSW) Department of Sport and Recreation being shortlisted for the best Sports Building (award) at the World Architecture Festival.
Heenan added that the contest was a "David and Goliath" effort.
The 2011 award was won by the Inzell Speed Skating Stadium from Germany.
