Melbourne gym teaches Israeli Defence Force combat skills and anti-terror techniques

Melbourne-based self-defence and fitness centre IDF Training specialises as Australia's largest trainer of Krav Maga - the hand-to-hand combat system of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

IDF Training founder, Avi Yemini (pictured above), an Australian-born former Israeli soldier, explains “Krav Maga ...,the official self defence system of the Israeli Army, was originally created to combat anti-Semitic violence on the streets back in the early 1900s.”

In addition to its Krav Maga signature offering, IDF Training offers scheduled classes, private training and workshops in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts backed by a full weights gym, 24/7 access and showering facilities.

Located in Hawthorn Road, Caulfield, IDF Training began as a one-on-one training studio in 2008, when founder Yemini returned from serving with the IDF and completed a personal training certificate with the Australian Institute of Fitness.

Yemini is passionate about equipping his clients with self-defence skills and in his support of Israel, describing his gym as “the perfect launchpad to join the Israeli Defence Force and have the adventure of a lifetime.”

He has issued calls to “healthy, fit Australians to join the Israeli Defence Force” for a “life-changing experience.”

A recent press release from IDF Training, entitled ‘Local Australian Gym Recruiting Fighters For Foreign Armies’ explains “as each new day brings news of more terror threats - both internationally and right here on Australian home soil - a growing number of Australian citizens take the first steps to join the battle.

“For some, that means signing up to the Australian Defence Force.

“For others, there is another choice: join the Israeli Defence Force (IDF). And it's an option one local gym owner is actively encouraging.

“It's a call a growing number of Australian men and women are responding to.

“Although there are no official figures on how many Australians are fighting in foreign armies, (Yemini) believes that the constant terrorist threats around the globe have been a motivating force in a growing number of young Australians wanting to make a genuine difference by becoming a foreign soldier.

“For anyone keen to defend the freedoms they believe are the right of all good global citizens - at IDF Training, (Yemini) knows that professional, thorough preparation is critical.

“To find out more about how IDF Training can help you take positive action and join the Israeli Defence Force - contact IDF Training today.”

Previously IDF Training has collected donations for Friends of the IDF, a charity organisation in Israel that initiates and helps support educational, social, cultural and recreational programs and facilities for the young men and women soldiers who defend Israel.

It is not illegal for Australians to fight for armies of foreign nations not under sanctions from the United Nations, with Australian nationals understood to be serving with the defence forces of Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom, as well as the IDF.

The ABC has reported that between 2008 and 2012, up to 400 Australian Jews served with the IDF, while, in 2014, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that there are about 2,500 foreign citizens from more than 60 countries enlisted in the IDF, of which it was believed 100 were Australian.

As well as IDF Training, a number of Zionist youth groups also encourage young Australian Jews to serve with the IDF.
