Mark Stockwell to chair Australian Sports Foundation
Businessman and Olympian Mark Stockwell has been named as the new Chair of the Australian Sports Foundation.
Federal Minister for Sport Peter Dutton has appointed Stockwell for a three year term until 30th June 2017.
A member of Australia’s swim team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where he won two silver medals and one bronze medal, Stockwell recently led Australia’s successful bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
Following his retirement from swimming in 1992, he became the Managing Director of Stockwell Design and Construction.
Currently, he is the Chairman of Trade and Investment Queensland and a past President of the Queensland Division of the Property Council of Australia.
Commenting on the appointment, Minister Dutton explained “Mark Stockwell’s extensive sports and business experience will support community organisations to raise funds for sporting initiatives that may otherwise struggle to get off the ground."
Minister Dutton paid tribute to former ASF Chairs Alisa Camplin-Warner and Margy Osmond for their significant contribution to the Foundation, adding “Ms Camplin-Warner and Ms Osmond leave the ASF in a strong position and led a period of significant growth in the organisation’s public profile and financial support.
“During their tenure, donations to the ASF increased from about $14.3 million in 2010 to $21.1 million in 2013.
“Both will continue to contribute to the development of sport in Australia through their roles as board members of the Australian Sports Commission.”
The ASF was established by the Australian Government in 1986 to assist non-profit community organisations to raise funds to develop sport and has distributed more than $220 million to support participation in sport.
