Knox Basketball Stadium to be demolished

Knox Basketball Stadium, located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, will be demolished following the $132 million upgrade of the State Basketball Centre at Knox Regional Sports Park.

Knox City Council decided in 2017to decommission the stadium, which is over 45 years old and has significant structural defects while also being flood prone. An earlier report commissioned by Council had classified the stadium's structural damage as 'severe'.

The same year, Council instigated a review of Knox Regional Sports Park and developed plans to build more basketball courts, a centre for gymnastics and sporting administration facilities.

Knox Basketball Inc, the old stadium's previous year-round tenant, have finished their final season and Council has supported them in moving into their new home at the State Basketball Centre.

The new centre represents Council's biggest ever investment in community facilities, attracting an estimated two million people a year. Council secured $105 million funding from the Victorian Government and contributed a further $27 million towards the centre, which officially opened earlier this year.

It provides new administration facilities for Knox Basketball Inc and has 12 new indoor courts for local basketball competitions, bringing the total to 18 courts. It also has regional-level gymnastics facilities.

Demolition of the old stadium will take place from January-April 2025.

Following the demolition, grass planting and maintenance will occur at the site from April until the end of July 2025, to create an open grassed area.
