Game on at Knox Regional Sports Park
The Knox Regional Sports Park, a new home for the Victorian State Basketball Centre and the Knox regional football (soccer) centre, has opened.
The facility, which features the largest retractable seating stadium in the southern hemisphere, was developed as a result of a funding partnership between the Australian and Victorian Governments, Knox City Council and contributions from key stakeholders.
Key features of the new sports complex include:
• An indoor sports stadium, with six basketball courts and a 3,200-seat show court;
• Two synthetic football pitches and a football pavilion including Australia's first Football Fives futsal (five-a-side football) centre;
• Open grassed recreational areas; and
• Landscaped car parking areas, pathways and trails with native trees.
Officially opening the facility last week, Regional Australia Minister Simon Crean outlined the Federal Government's support for the project, stating "this is a first rate facility which will benefit the community for many years to come. It supports grassroots participation and has the capacity to produce the basketball and football stars of tomorrow."
The Knox Regional Sports Park has been partly funded by the $1.1 billion Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.
